Geoblocking by country from the client area
All our hosting services include advanced security measures that filter malicious traffic automatically. However, there are situations where the geographical origin of the traffic is a key factor: sites under persistent attack from specific regions, online shops that only operate in certain markets, or projects that must restrict access from certain countries for regulatory reasons.
Until now, applying this kind of restriction meant manually editing server configuration files with GeoIP directives, something not every user has the experience or the time to do. That is why we have built a new geoblocking tool, integrated directly into the client area, that makes the whole process simple.
Two modes
The tool offers two blocking modes for different needs:
Blacklist: you select the countries you want to block and the rest of the world can access as normal. This is the most common option and the one we recommend for most situations, for example if you see recurring attacks from certain regions.
Whitelist: you select the countries you want to allow and access from anywhere else is blocked. Ideal for projects that only operate in specific markets or that must meet legal requirements for restricted access.
Separate settings for each domain
Each domain hosted on your service can have its own blocking settings. This is especially useful if you manage several sites with different needs: you can block certain countries on one domain while leaving another completely open, all from the same interface.
Quick selection by continent
You do not need to select countries one by one. The interface groups all countries by continent, so you can select or deselect a whole continent with a single click. Continents work as collapsible accordions to keep the interface clean and easy to use, even with more than 200 countries available.
There is also a search box to find any country quickly without scrolling through the whole list.
Things to bear in mind
Bear in mind that search engine bots such as Google or Bing operate from servers in different countries. If you use whitelist mode, make sure you include the countries these bots operate from so your site's indexing is not affected. In general, we recommend blacklist mode for most situations, blocking only the countries that cause problems.
The settings are applied at web server level, which makes them more robust and efficient than solutions based on plugins or application code. Changes apply immediately and cannot be modified by accident.
Geoblocking is available from today on all hosting plans at no extra cost. You will find it in the client area, in your hosting service's options.
