Horde removed in cPanel 108

Update 1 min read

The cPanel team announced that Horde will be removed in version 108, due out in 2 to 3 months.

It is a somewhat hasty decision, but it is driven by the lack of maintenance from the Horde development team: more than a year without updates, hundreds of bugs piling up unattended in its bug trackers and no intention of adapting to PHP 8, an essential requirement for moving forward now that PHP 7.4 is reaching end of life.

The same thing happened years ago with a third alternative that coexisted with Roundcube and Horde, Squirrelmail, which had to be removed after being stuck for years offering poor functionality and few updates.

All contacts, calendars and any other information will be migrated automatically to Roundcube when the time comes.

cPanel is considering adding another webmail alternative, although no decision has been made yet.

We know this kind of change is always somewhat "traumatic" for users accustomed to a particular piece of software. However, Roundcube is a constantly evolving webmail, with very active development, and although simple in appearance it matches the features Horde offered. It is the webmail we have always recommended.

We keep improving.
