Hablator is an advanced chat system built in PHP and Javascript, ideal if you want a flexible, lightweight solution for online chat. It's open source (GPL) and doesn't need complicated software or powerful servers.

Its main features include automatic message translation so you can talk with people who speak other languages, the option to see who is typing, easy file uploads in the conversation and the ability to create several discussion topics so conversations don't get mixed up. You can store data in plain files, MySQL or SQLite, depending on your needs. There's also a compatibility mode for users without Javascript support or with text-only browsers.
