phpDocumentor is a tool that automatically generates documentation from PHP source code, similar to Javadoc but adapted to the PHP world. It's ideal if you want to keep your projects' documentation up to date and clear without doing it by hand. You can use it from the command line or from a web interface.

It lets you create documentation in HTML, PDF, CHM and XML DocBook, link between different parts of the manual, highlight source code and even include examples or tutorials. It supports JavaDoc-style tags (with PHP-specific customisations), generates inheritance diagrams and recognises files such as README or CHANGELOG. You can also customise the documentation's design and generate to-do lists using @todo tags in the code. It's fast and suits both small and large projects.
