Changes to the transfer process for .es, .com.es, .nom.es and .org.es domains

Information 3 min read

The .es domain regulator (Red.es) has announced major changes to the domain transfer process, taking effect from 20 November 2024. The change affects all extensions managed by Red.es (.es, .com.es, .nom.es and .org.es) and aims to make the transfer process more secure.

New transfer process

The most significant change is the introduction of the authorisation code (also known as the authcode), a system widely used for other extensions such as .com or .net, which will now be required to transfer any .es domain.

This code:

  • Must be obtained from the domain's current provider
  • Is valid for 10 calendar days from when it is generated
  • Must be provided when starting the transfer process

How do I get the auth code?

For domains registered with us

If you want to transfer your domain to another provider, you can get the auth code from our client area: go to Domains and, in the options menu, open Security. The code will be sent to the email address listed as the domain's administrative contact in about 15 minutes.

For domains with other providers

Request the auth code from your current provider's domain management panel, or contact their support team so they can give it to you.

How do I transfer a .es domain?

  1. Get the authorisation code (authcode) from your current provider
  2. Start the transfer from our order form or from the client area
  3. Wait for the email titled "Red.es. Confirmación transferencia" to authorise the process
  4. The domain will be transferred within a few hours of approval

Important: the confirmation email is sent to the address listed as the domain's administrative contact

Frequently asked questions

Will my domains keep working during the transfer?

Yes. The transfer is an administrative process and does not affect how the domain works.

Is the domain renewed when it is transferred?

Yes. The transfer includes a one-year renewal, added to the current expiry date.

What happens if the authcode has expired?

You will need to request a new one from your current provider, as it becomes invalid 10 days after it is generated.
